Civil union: how to register
The Cirinnà law (law 76/2016) introduced civil unions in Italy for same-sex couples. It guarantees rights similar to marriage: inheritance, healthcare, surname, tax benefits. The entire procedure takes place at the local municipality.

What you need
- ✓Valid ID document (ID card or passport)
- ✓Tax code (codice fiscale)
- ✓Certificate of civil status (if divorced or widowed)
- ✓No-objection certificate if one partner is foreign
Step-by-step procedure

Go to the Civil Registry Office of your municipalityBoth partners must appear in person at the Civil Registry Office. You can do this at any Italian municipality, not necessarily your place of residence.

Submit the declaration of intent to form a civil unionThe official records your intention and sets the date of the celebration. The minimum period between the declaration and the celebration is usually 7 days (varies by municipality).
Some municipalities require an appointment. Check your municipality's website.

Bring witnesses (2 required)On the day of the ceremony, at least 2 adult witnesses must be present. You can choose anyone: they don't need to be relatives.

Celebrate the civil unionThe civil registry official reads the relevant articles of law and declares the civil union formed. The deed of civil union is drawn up and signed.

Update documents and notify registriesAfter the ceremony: update your health card, your GP, and inform your employer for tax benefits (deductions for dependent partner, etc.).
You may choose to take your partner's surname by adding it to or replacing your own.
