Is the tax code and the health card the same thing?

The tax code is the 16-character alphanumeric number. The health card is the physical document (like a credit card) that displays it, plus a microchip for health services. Both are issued by the Ministry of Economy.

Can I calculate my tax code myself?

The tax code follows a public algorithm based on first name, surname, date and place of birth. Online calculators exist (e.g. codicefiscale.com), but the official code is only the one issued by Agenzia delle Entrate.

Does the tax code change if I marry and change my surname?

No. The tax code remains unchanged throughout your life, even if your name or surname changes. However, Agenzia delle Entrate updates its records with the new name.

Tax code: request and duplicate

The tax code (codice fiscale) is assigned automatically at birth to all Italian citizens. For those born abroad or who have never received one, it must be requested from Agenzia delle Entrate. The health card (which shows the tax code) is sent home by the MEF. If lost, a duplicate can be requested online or at the office.

Step-by-step procedure

First-time tax code request

If you were born in Italy the tax code was assigned to you at birth registration. If you were born abroad or have never received one, go to any Agenzia delle Entrate office with your identity document and birth certificate. The code is issued immediately on paper.

Foreign citizens resident in Italy receive the tax code from the municipality when registering their residency.

Request a duplicate health card (online)

If you already have the tax code but lost the health card, request it online at sistemats.it with SPID or CIE. The duplicate is sent home within 15 days. It is free. You can also get it at your ASL or municipality.

Use the tax code in digital format

While waiting for the physical card, the tax code is immediately available on sistemats.it and the IO app. Many services accept just the alphanumeric code (16 characters). If you have SPID, the tax code is always accessible through your digital identity.
