Step-by-step procedure
1
Sign the deed of saleSeller and buyer sign the private deed of sale. It must include: details of both parties, plate and vehicle data, agreed price, date and signature. Notarial authentication is not required for private parties.
The seller must keep a copy of the deed to report the sale and avoid liability for future traffic violations.
2
The seller notifies the saleThe seller must report the transfer within 60 days to the Motorizzazione via the Driver's Portal (sportellodelmotorista.it) or at an STA or automotive practice office. This releases the seller from liability for future violations.
3
Register the transfer with the PRAThe buyer (or STA) submits the registration request to the Public Automotive Registry (PRA) within 60 days. The provincial transcription tax (IPT, variable by power and province) and ACI fees are paid. The registration document is updated with the new owner.
An automotive practice agency can handle everything for you, usually for €150-250 in fees.
4
Insure the vehicle before drivingThe buyer must take out a new RC car insurance policy in their name before driving. If the seller immediately cancels their policy, the vehicle is uninsured: the new owner cannot drive until they have their own insurance.
