Step-by-step procedure

Apply for Italian entry visa

If you are not EU/EEA/Switzerland, you must apply for a visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country. Visa types: D (long-term: work, study, family), C (short-term: tourism). For a D visa, you need an employment contract or invitation letter, financial documents, insurance coverage.

Processing times are 15-60 days depending on the Consulate. Apply at least 3 months in advance.

Arrive in Italy and apply for residence permit

Within 8 days of arrival, you must report your residence to the local Questura (Police). Present your visa, passport, and residence contract (rental or property). The Questura gives you a temporary receipt valid for 90 days while the permit is processed (usually 20-30 days).
