Resignation and unemployment benefit: procedure, severance, benefits (2026)
If you decide to leave your job, you can resign online with SPID (mandatory since 2022). Once you resign, you are entitled to NASPI (unemployment benefit) if you meet certain requirements. This guide explains: how to resign, when you receive NASPI, the amount, and severance calculation.

Step-by-step procedure
1
File resignation online via SPID
Access the INPS portal with SPID, section 'Work' > 'Resignation'. Complete the form: planned resignation date, reason (optional), notes. Once submitted, you receive a digital receipt. Your employer automatically receives notice from INPS. You are entitled to 2 weeks' notice (usually 30 days per contract, but legally 2 weeks is minimum).
Online resignation replaces registered mail. No more paper registered letters since 2022.
2
Calculate severance pay
Severance pay is a lump sum equal to one month of gross salary per year of work (plus family allowances if any). Example: 5 years of work, gross salary €2,000 = €10,000 severance (plus taxes). Your employer credits you within 30-60 days of the end of employment. It's not taxed at source but you must declare it in your 730.
Severance is a right: your employer cannot refuse it.
3
Apply for NASPI (unemployment benefit)
After resignation, you are eligible for NASPI if: 1) You worked at least 13 weeks in the last 4 years, 2) You paid at least 104 days of contributions in the last 2 years. Apply online via SPID on the INPS portal, section 'Benefits' > 'NASPI'. The application must be made within 68 days of the end of employment.
If you don't meet requirements, you are not eligible for NASPI. Also excluded: voluntary resignation without just cause.
4
Wait for NASPI payment
Once approved (usually 15-20 days), NASPI is credited to you monthly (usually between the 15th and 20th of the month). The amount is 75% of the average gross daily salary over the last 4 years. Duration: maximum 24 months for those who worked more than 2 years. If you find work first, NASPI stops.
NASPI is not automatic: you must apply for it. If you don't apply within 68 days, you lose it.
5
Report NASPI and severance in annual declaration
In your 730 or Redditi form for the year of resignation, you must report: 1) Severance received (gross), 2) NASPI received (gross). Both are taxable (you pay taxes on the full amount). INPS sends pre-filled data to the system, but verify it's correct.
If you don't report it, you risk an audit from the Revenue Agency.
