Vehicle MOT inspection
The periodic vehicle inspection is mandatory for all vehicles registered in Italy. The first inspection is due 4 years after the first registration, then every 2 years. It can be done at the Motorizzazione Civile or at authorised garages (private inspection centres). A vehicle without a valid inspection cannot be driven.

1
Check the due dateThe inspection due date is shown on the registration document and on the windscreen sticker. You can also check it at motorizzazione.gov.it by entering the plate. The inspection can be done up to 60 days before the due date without losing the annual cycle.
Driving past the due date: fine from €173 to €694 and vehicle impoundment until regularised.
2
Book an appointmentYou can book online at motorizzazione.gov.it (Motorizzazione Civile) or directly at an authorised private inspection centre near you. Private centres often have shorter waiting times.
3
Present the vehicle for inspectionThe technician checks: brakes, steering, lights (dipped, full beam, brake, indicators, reversing), tyres (tread and pressure), emissions, seatbelts, bodywork, electrical system and vehicle identifiers. The inspection takes about 30-45 minutes.
Before the inspection: check fluid levels (oil, brake fluid, coolant), lights and tyre pressure yourself.
4
Receive the resultIf the vehicle passes: the registration document is updated and you receive a new windscreen sticker. If it fails: you have 30 days to fix the defects and return for a partial re-inspection (only for failed items). After 30 days, the inspection starts from scratch.
