Is it available to self-employed and unemployed people?

Yes. The allowance is universal: it is available to employees, self-employed, unemployed, pensioners and even those with no income. You just need to be resident in Italy and have dependent children.

Does the amount change if I have more children?

Yes. From the third child onwards there is an increased amount. There are also supplements for disabled children, mothers under 21, and large families.

What happens in case of separation?

The allowance can be claimed by one parent or split 50/50. In case of sole custody it goes to the custodial parent.

Universal Child Allowance

The Universal Child Allowance is a monthly benefit for dependent children aged 0 to 21 (no age limit for disabled children). The amount depends on family ISEE income: from around €57/month for ISEE above €45,000 to over €175/month for very low ISEE. Applied for annually via INPS.

What you need

✓SPID, CIE or CNS
✓Valid ISEE certificate (obtain it first via CAF or INPS)
✓IBAN in the name of one of the parents
✓Tax code of each child

Step-by-step procedure

Obtain or update your ISEE

Before applying, make sure you have a valid ISEE. You can request it for free online on INPS (pre-filled DSU) or at a CAF. Without ISEE you receive the minimum amount.

Go to inps.it with SPID or CIE. Search for "Assegno Unico e Universale" and click "New application". Enter the details of all dependent children, your IBAN, and custody information if relevant.

You can also apply through a patronage office (CAF, ACLI, INCA) free of charge.

Wait for the monthly payment

INPS processes the application and starts payments usually within 60 days. The allowance is credited monthly to your IBAN.

The application must be renewed every year, usually by 28 February. If submitted by 30 June it is backdated to March.
